Welcome to Newbury Aikido Club

Founded in 1985 by 4th Dan Kevin Lee, Newbury Aikido Club is a sociable and fun club that harbours the Tomiki way of training in Aikido. Aikido works by turning the force of an attack back on to its self, this way, the size of an attacker doesn't matter. This type of training does not refer to the body and mind as separate entites, but as one, making you whole.

All techniques therefore are defensive and are applied smoothly, calmly with the consideration and the well-being of the attacker. Because of this, Aikido is a pure defensive martial art which sets it apart from others.

The type of Aikido at Newbury is that of Mr. Tomiki, (one of O’sensei’s great students) people might think that this “style” of Aikido is a bit too much of a sport then a true or pure martial art, this is a wrong statement, Mr.Tomiki, having been a 9th Dan black belt in judo, had some influence on the Aikido that he practised at that time. O’sensei once said “Though there are many paths at the foot of the mountain all those who reach the top see the same moon”, implying that no matter how you are taught, no matter what “style” of Aikido you are doing, it is still the same, you will always end up with the principles of Aikido.
